Prophetic revelation, or divination, dates back to the earliest known times of human existence. Evidence shows that methods of divination were used by the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Babylonians and the Sumerians (who resided in what is now Iraq) as early as six‐thousand years ago. The oldest of all Chinese texts, the I Ching, is a divination system older than recorded history. James Legge says in his translation of I Ching: Book Of Changes (1996),
The desire to seek answers and to predict the future is as old as civilization itself.
A divination system may be defined as:
A standardized process deriving from a learned discipline based on an extensive body of knowledge.
–African Divination Systems: Ways of Knowing (1991), Philip M. Peek
The general consensus is that divination falls into three categories:
- interpretation of natural phenomena, (known as augury and includes such things as water, flight of a bird, shape of a flame, cloud formations, etc.);
- interpretation of symbolic phenomena (casting runes, stones, bones, Tarot Cards, numerology);
- communication with a deity via dreams, visions or embodiment.
The goal of divination is to help the divinee (client) bring his/her gifts fully into the world. African divination is action-oriented, seeking to find solutions and ways to bring out positive change in the divinee’s life. It is not fortune telling, but an exploration of possibilities to produce positive outcomes.
Divination seeks to empower the divinee; to bring good news; to assist the divinee in shifting his/her perspective towards manifesting their genius and problem-solve. Divination is essentially a diagnostic tool. Diagnosis is the identification of the nature and cause of a certain negative situations and imbalances to determine the “cause and effect” of these physical, spiritual, emotional imbalances. As a diviner, your goal is to determine the causes of these imbalances and mitigate their impact by providing effective traditional solutions.
